Our Columbia River Gorge

Vineyards

Estate Vineyard

The estate vineyard is our newest vineyard and a work in progress. Here we decided to focus on Piedmont Italian varieties that share the same latitude as in the Gorge. We have planted Dolcetto and Nebbiolo and hope to have our first harvest this year.

The Arbor Vineyard

The Arbor vineyard, two miles west of the estate, is our oldest vineyard and the one we began working back in 2014. Surrounded by steep cliffs on one side and the Columbia River on the other, makes for an interesting growing environment. Rhone varieties thrive at this location. We get mostly Cinsault, but also Mourvedre and Counoise from this vineyard.

Oregon side vineyards

We go to several vineyards on the Oregon side of the Columbia, such as Phelps Creek vineyard or the Scott Road vineyard in Odell. This is where we harvest our Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Tempranillo.

Columbia Gorge Region

In the Columbia Gorge there are two AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas). At Via Cangiamilla we make our wines exclusively from grapes grown in the Columbia Gorge AVA, even though the Columbia Valley AVA is only a mile east of the winery.

The Columbia Gorge AVA is the westernmost appellation in eastern Washington. It is perhaps the most diverse in the state, with dramatic differences east-to-west in precipitation, heat accumulation, and soil composition. The river’s cut through the Cascade Mountains resulted in radically different micro-climates losing one inch of rainfall per mile eastward. It is a place of extremes in climate, scenery, and style of wine. We are proud to be part of this area and to make and serve wine that is unique to this region.
